Refugee History and Background
Congolese Traditional Dance Group
This is an overview of percentages of African immigrants to Australia, some of the challenges and history of each group and how immigration to Australia has changed their lives.
According to Dr. Appollo Nsubaga- Kyobe, ‘A literature survey indicates that research concerning African communities in Australia has grown during the 1980s and 1990s.’
Also, the research undertaken by Cooper, Cox and Adeponju in 1999 shows the communities consist of South African 15%, Zimbabwe 35% and Kenya 40%. (Statistics in Victoria.)
However, there was resettlement of refugees from other countries like Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia under Australian’s Humanitarian Program. Many of these countries faced political instability or are still presently in civil wars and insecurities.
Map of Africa
Looking at this map of Africa helps us identify countries of origin with regards to African migration in Victoria. It is also a visual way to locate not only where refugees come from, but to have a clear picture of the proportion of African migration to Australia in 1987- 88 and 1997-98, which ranges between 2.8% and 7.5% of the total migration figure. (Dr. Nsubuga-Kyobe)
